PDOException: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL

I get the following error message when I try to access my website: 

PDOException: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL

Can anybody help me out? How can I fix this issue?
